Bees get contributions across the board in win over Mustangs

Four Bees scored in double figures to lead St. Ambrose to an 80-65 win over Mount Mercy Wednesday night inside Lee Lohman Arena.

It wasn't the Bees' best shooting night (34.7 percent) but they worked hard on the boards, pulling down 20 on the offensive end leading to 22 second-chance points, in moving to 4-1 on the year.

Isaiah Harvey came off the bench to score 19 points as the Bee reserves outscored the Mustang bench 31-22.

John Kerr scored 14 points, Michael Williams had 12 and Ben Schols added 10. Dylan Kaczmarek netted seven points while Jake Meeske and Warren Allen each chipped in with six to hand MMU its first loss of the year.

St. Ambrose got contributions up and down the lineup on the boards as well.

Schols and Kerr each grabbed eight rebounds while Williams and Harvey pulled down seven apiece. Schols, Kerr and Kaczmarek had four each on the offensive end.

The work on the glass allowed SAU to overcome its 26-of-75 shooting performance by taking 18 more shots than MMU.

After a back-and-forth first half that ended with SAU up 44-38, the Bees got off to a fast start in the second half. Two Mount Mercy free throws cut the margin to 44-40, but a 3-pointer from Kaczmarek, a layup from Kerr and a basket from Williams coming after Kaczmarek tracked down an offensive rebound, pushed the advantage to 51-40.

The Mustangs (3-1) closed to within five points midway through the second half, but the Bees had an immediate answer.

A Williams jumper in the paint sparked a 7-0 run that ended with a Harvey three upping the lead to 67-55. The lead stayed in double figures the rest of the way.

The St. Ambrose defense limited Mount Mercy to 38.6 percent shooting and a 5-of-27 mark from beyond the arc. The Bees also forced 17 Mustang turnovers.

SAU returns to CCAC action Saturday at Robert Morris.
