Schols scores 22 as Bees win big again

A hot-shooting start to the season carried over to game two as St. Ambrose improved to 2-0 following a 92-54 win over Grand View in the first round of the Holiday Inn Express Tip-Off Classic in Dubuque, Iowa.

After shooting better than 57 percent in a season-opening win over East-West University Tuesday, the Bees continued their torrid shooting. SAU hit 37-of-64 attempts from the field, a 57.8-percent clip, in running past the Vikings.

It was a big run at the end of the first half that ultimately made the difference.

Leading 28-23 with under six minutes to play, St. Ambrose closed the half on a 15-3 run. Ben Schols, Warren Allen and Patrick Torrey each had four points and Trey Affolter hit a 3-pointer during the spurt to push the lead to 43-26 at the break.

Grand View closed to within 54-40 five minutes into the second half, but Schols scored five straight, including a three-point play, and Michael Williams added a jumper to extend the lead to 61-40. The Bees continued to pull away from there.

Schols was 9-of-13 from the field and hit his only two 3-point attempts in finishing with a game-high 22 points.

Allen was 8-of-11 in scoring 17 and Williams finished with 12.

Torrey, Affolter and Tom Kazanecki each scored eight, John Kerr had seven, Jake Meeske dropped in six points and Dylan Kaczmarek netted four. Meeske led the team with eight rebounds and four assists.

SAU also got it done on the defensive end, forcing Grand View into less than 35 percent shooting and 20 turnovers.

The Bees will wrap up the two-day classic Saturday against host Clarke. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
