Portwood's career high lifts St. Ambrose to Senior Night win

Alex Portwood scored a career-high 26 points to lead St. Ambrose to a 75-53 win on Senior Night Wednesday at Lee Lohman Arena.

Twenty of his points came in the second half as the Bees moved to 17-11 overall and 12-7 in the CCAC. SAU is alone in fourth place in the conference and will wrap up the regular season Saturday at St. Francis. The eight-team CCAC Tournament will begin next week.

Portwood and his fellow seniors Jason Capper, Kevin Krahn, Mike Mooney and Drew Wichers were honored before the game and started for the Bees.

Portwood hit four free throws during an 11-2 run that gave St. Ambrose a 31-22 lead late in the first half. The lead remained nine points at 33-24 at the half.

Trinity Christian (7-21, 3-16 CCAC) closed to within 49-45 midway through the second half but a 24-5 St. Ambrose spurt broke things open. Portwood scored 13 points in the run that opened up a 73-50 lead with just over two minutes remaining to seal the win.

In the second half, Portwood was 7-of-8 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. His 26 points doubled his previous career high of 13 set earlier this season.

He helped St. Ambrose shoot 57.7 percent in the second half (15-of-26) after the team shot just 29.7 percent (11-of-37) over the game's first 20 minutes.

Portwood's big night overshadowed another strong performance from John Kerr. The reigning CCAC Player of the Week came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 17 rebounds, leading SAU to a decisive 54-33 rebounding advantage.

Ben Schols added 10 points and Jalen Jones finished with seven.
