Kerr and Allen spark late second-half rally as Bees top Wolves

St. Ambrose outscored Cardinal Stritch 20-4 over the final 6:06 to escape with a 66-61 win in Milwaukee, Wis., Saturday afternoon.

John Kerr led the late charge, scoring eight of his game-high 27 points in the run that helped the Bees move to 16-10 overall and 11-7 in the CCAC.

Trailing 57-46, a Kerr layup sparked SAU. Warren Allen followed with back-to-back layups of his own, the last coming as part of a three-point play to trim the deficit to 57-53. After a defensive stop, Ben Schols tracked down an offensive rebound of his own miss and knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the gap to a single point.

Two Cardinal Stritch free throws pushed the lead to 59-56, but Kerr scored inside and after the Bees forced a turnover, Kerr knocked down two free throws to give St. Ambrose a 60-59 advantage. It was the Bees' first lead since holding a 9-6 edge in the game's first three minutes.

Another defensive stop led to a Jalen Jones dunk and a three-point lead. The Wolves (14-12, 8-10 CCAC) cut the score to 62-61 but Jones and Kerr combined to go 4-for-4 from the line in the final few seconds to seal the comeback victory.

Kerr finished with 12 points in the second half, a number matched by Allen, who was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor over the final 20 minutes.

Kerr matched his career-high with 27 points, shooting 11-of-16 from the field. He added a game-high 11 rebounds, nine of those coming in the second half.

Allen ended with 14 points and seven boards and Jones scored 12 points.

After hitting just 10-of-30 shots in the first half, St. Ambrose connected on 14-of-25 in the second (56 percent). The Bees also connected on 11-of-15 second-half free throws to outscore the Wolves 14-4 from the line for the game.

The victory helped St. Ambrose keep pace with the top of the conference. SAU is tied with Roosevelt for fourth place, just a game out of a second-place tie, with one league game remaining.

Kerr and Allen made sure Wednesday's regular-season finale against Trinity International will matter.

But before the Bees recognize their seniors against TIU on Wednesday's Senior Night, the team will host Lincoln College Monday at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
