Turnovers cost St. Ambrose in loss to Governors State

St. Ambrose was unable to out-shoot its turnover problems Wednesday night. The Bees shot better than 71 percent from the floor in the first half, finished at nearly 56 percent for the game, but 25 turnovers proved costly in a 68-66 home loss to Governors State.

Three of those turnovers came in the final three minutes after a John Kerr layup had given SAU a 59-56 lead. After the Jaguars grabbed a 61-59 lead, a Kerr three-point play gave St. Ambrose its final lead at 62-61 with 1:26 to go.

But Governors State (14-13, 12-5 CCAC) answered with a three, and after SAU's final turnover of the night, added a free throw for a 65-62 lead inside the final minute. Dylan Kaczmarek misfired on a long three leading to two more Jaguar free throws. Kaczmarek scored on a layup before GSU iced the win with another free throw. Jalen Jones had a dunk in the final two seconds to account for the final score.

The turnovers erased a fast start.

Two 3-pointers from Ben Schols, another from Jones and a jumper from Kerr gave St. Ambrose an 11-0 lead three minutes into the game. Jones hit four threes in the half, a half in which the Bees as a team were 10-of-13 from beyond the arc. St. Ambrose hit 15-of-21 overall shots in building a 41-33 lead at the break.

SAU (15-10, 10-7 CCAC) twice built a double-digit lead in the second half, the first time coming on a Warren Allen layup and the last time coming on a Kerr 3-pointer just over two minutes in. But the Jaguars used an 8-0 run to tie the game at 50-50 midway through the second half and the score remained close from there.

Jones and Kerr each scored 17 points to lead St. Ambrose. Kerr added game highs of seven rebounds and seven assists. Allen finished with nine points.

Along with the turnovers, SAU was also beat at the line, getting outscored 19-6 on free throws.

The Bees, who saw their four-game winning streak snapped, will next visit Cardinal Stritch Saturday.
