Bees earn third straight victory by defeating Crimson Wave

Jalen Jones scored a game-high 24 points and sparked a decisive second-half run to help St. Ambrose to its third straight win, a 76-61 victory at Calumet St. Joseph in Whiting, Ind., Saturday afternoon.

The Bees improved to 14-9 overall and maintained pace with the top of the conference with a 9-6 CCAC mark.

In a back-and-forth game, SAU held a slim 46-45 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining. Then Jones went to work.

The junior connected on 3-of-4 free throws before hitting a 3-pointer to up the lead to 52-45. Michael Williams and Warren Allen each hit jumpers to cap a 10-0 run for a 56-45 lead. After the Crimson Wave (16-7, 8-7 CCAC) scored, Williams and John Kerr each had baskets before Jones hit two more from the line.

Calumet added a free throw before Jones buried a three. In all, it was a 19-3 run over six-plus minutes that gave St. Ambrose a 65-48 lead with under six minutes left. Jones had 11 of those 19 Bee points.

The Wave never cut the deficit under double figures the rest of the way. Jake Meeske, Dylan Kaczmarek and Williams combined to hit 8-of-10 free throws, and Meeske added a 3-pointer, down the stretch to seal the win.

St. Ambrose outscored Calumet 44-30 in the second half. The Bees also finished with a 42-27 rebounding advantage and outscored the Wave 21-8 from the line.

Jones, Meeske (10 points) and Alex Portwood (8) helped the Bee bench outscore the Calumet reserves 42-6.

Allen and Williams gave SAU four players in double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Kerr finished with seven points in the win.

St. Ambrose will next visit CCAC foe Roosevelt Monday night.
