Second-half rally not enough in loss at IU-South Bend

St. Ambrose surrendered a 20-3 run in the first half and could never get over the hump in the second half in a 91-87 loss at Indiana South Bend Saturday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Bees to 11-9 overall and 6-6 in the CCAC.

A Michael Williams 3-pointer gave SAU a 25-20 lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half. But over the next six minutes, the Bees would make just 1-of-7 field goals, commit four turnovers and miss a pair of free throws as the Titans went on their game-deciding 20-3 spurt to take a 40-28 lead.

Williams hit two free throws to snap the drought and later hit a three in the closing seconds of the half to get the deficit down to 44-36 at the break.

St. Ambrose continued to battle back in the second half. The Bees got within two points on a Dylan Kaczmarek 3-pointer four minutes in, and a minute later, closed to within 53-52 on two Warren Allen free throws. Jake Meeske hit two from the line to keep the deficit at a single point at 55-54 and the Bees had a chance for the lead but Kaczmarek's three was off the mark. A turnover following an offensive rebound sparked a six-point Titans run and a 61-54 score.

SAU made another run and two threes from Alex Portwood sandwiched around another from Ben Schols tied the game at 68-68. But what followed was a four-minute dry spell as IU-South Bend (9-13, 4-8 CCAC) scored 11 in a row for a 79-68 lead.

The Bees were able to get within three points twice in the final minute but the Titans were able to do just enough from the line to hold on for the victory.

Schols finished 4-of-6 from beyond the arc in netting a team-high 18 points. Williams also hit four from deep in scoring 14. Allen and John Kerr each scored 12 points in the loss.

The Bees will return home to host Saint Xavier Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
