Bees stumble in overtime shootout at RMU

St. Ambrose was outscored 15-9 in overtime to fall 117-111 at Robert Morris Wednesday night.

After John Kerr opened the extra session with two free throws for a 104-102 lead, the Bees hit a nearly three-minute dry spell. Over the stretch, SAU missed three field goal attempts, including two layups, and committed a pair of turnovers while making just 1-of-4 free throw attempts as RMU (9-10, 5-4 CCAC) opened up a 111-105 advantage.

Warren Allen stopped the bleeding with an offensive rebound and put back to trim the deficit to four points with 1:30 remaining. But forced to foul, the Bees watched the Eagles seal the game by hitting 6-of-8 free throws over the final 1:11.

The loss dropped St. Ambrose to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in the CCAC.

It also spoiled some strong individual performances.

Allen led the way with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Williams scored 23 before fouling out inside the final minute of regulation. Kerr narrowly missed a triple-double after posting 16 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists. Jalen Jones (14) and Jake Meeske (12) also scored in double figures.

SAU forced overtime after rallying from a 17-point deficit midway through the first half. The Bees trimmed the margin to 61-56 at halftime and led by as many as five points on three separate occasions in the second half.

Williams hit a three to put St. Ambrose up 89-85 with just over six minutes left. That would be the largest lead either team would hold the rest of regulation.

Robert Morris grabbed a 102-100 lead on a pair of free throws with 51 seconds remaining. But Allen found Kerr inside for a layup to tie the game with 28 seconds to play. The Eagles held for the final shot but a three at the buzzer was off the mark.

SAU shot 50 percent from the floor through the game's first 40 minutes before the overtime struggles dropped the mark to 48 percent for the game. RMU hit better than 52 percent from the field.

The Bees grabbed a 52-29 rebounding advantage but were undone by 27 turnovers, 16 of those coming in the first half.

Tom Kazanecki came off the bench to score nine points. Dylan Kaczmarek added seven points.
