Allen and Kerr lead St. Ambrose past Trinity International

Warren Allen and John Kerr combined for 46 points and 20 rebounds to lead St. Ambrose to an 83-69 home win over Trinity International Saturday.

Allen did most of his work in the first half, scoring 18 of his game-high 24 points, before giving way to Kerr, who dropped in 14 of his 22 points in the second half.

The duo combined to shoot 19-of-31 (61.3 percent) from the floor while the rest of the Bees shot just 15-of-39 (38.5 percent).

SAU had to overcome an early seven-point deficit against the preseason conference favorite to improve to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the CCAC.

After erasing the 13-6 deficit, the Bees led 27-25 with less than seven minutes remaining in the half. Allen and Kerr then combined for the game's next 12 points, with each player converting a three-point play during the stretch, to give St. Ambrose a 39-25 lead. The lead was 45-33 at the half thanks to an offensive rebound and put back from Tom Kazanecki at the buzzer.

Another Kazanecki jumper helped the Bees take their largest lead of the game at 59-39 seven minutes into the second half.

The Trojans (10-8, 4-4 CCAC) used a run of 3-pointers to close to within seven points at 68-61 with seven minutes remaining. Ben Schols responded with a three of his own and after a Jalen Jones free throw, the lead stayed in double figures the rest of the way.

Behind the big days from Allen (24 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists, 2 blocks) and Kerr (22 points, 13 rebounds) , Kazanecki and Schols each contributed eight points. Michael Williams finished with seven points and Alex Portwood scored five. Dylan Kaczmarek handed out eight of the team's 23 assists.

The Bees finished with a 48-37 rebounding advantage and limited the Trojans to less than 36 percent shooting from the field.

SAU will next visit Robert Morris Wednesday.
