Despite five in double figures, SAU falls to St. Francis

St. Ambrose saw its losing streak hit four games in an 88-77 home loss to St. Francis Saturday afternoon.

The loss came despite five Bees scoring in double figures, led by Warren Allen's 22 points and Jake Meeske's 20. Tom Kazanecki finished with 11 and Michael Williams and John Kerr each netted 10.

Allen scored the game's first eight points in helping SAU to a fast start. The lead was still eight at 21-13 on a Meeske layup midway through the first half. But over the next three minutes, the Bees went 0-for-3 from the field and 1-of-4 from the line and committed three turnovers, which allowed the Saints to go on an 11-1 run to build a 24-22 lead.

SAU bounced back with a mini run of its own. A layup from Alex Portwood was followed by jumpers from Kazanecki and Kerr to give the Bees a 32-27 lead with three minutes remaining in the half. But those would be the final Bee points of the half as USF closed with an 8-0 run to grab a 35-32 lead at the break.

A Meeske 3-pointer gave the Bees their final lead at 51-48. St. Francis answered with back-to-back threes and pulled away down the stretch. SAU got no closer than seven points over the last four minutes.

The Saints (10-3, 4-1 CCAC) finished 10-of-16 from beyond the arc and 24-of-29 from the line, while the Bees hit 5-of-18 3-point tries and 16-of-24 free throws.

The loss dropped St. Ambrose to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the CCAC.

Things don't get any easier for the Bees as they host undefeated and No. 22-ranked Calumet St. Joseph (12-0, 5-0) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
