Balanced attack helps Bees roll in season opener
Five players finished in double figures and 11 players scored at least five points as St. Ambrose opened the 2018-19 season with a 94-40 win at Emmaus Bible College Tuesday night.
The Bees shot nearly 54 percent from the floor (36-of-67) and connected on 15-of-32 3-point attempts in the win.
Warren Allen led the way with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He was 5-of-7 from the field.
Jake Meeske, Michael Williams, Hunter Fettkether and Tom Kazanecki each dropped in 10 points. Alex Portwood finished 3-of-6 from beyond the arc in chipping in with nine points.
SAU was able to race to a 19-5 lead six minutes into the contest and the lead ballooned to 33-11 on a Seth Kizer jumper with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.
After building a 47-24 halftime lead, the Bees really clamped down defensively in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 47-16 over the final 20 minutes.
Emmaus shot just 6-of-35 (17.1 percent) from the floor in the second half and finished 14-of-68 (20.6 percent) for the game.
Behind Allen and John Kerr's game-high 12 boards, St. Ambrose also finished with a dominating 59-24 rebounding advantage.
Kerr and Ben Schols each netted seven points while Dylan Kaczmarek and Kevin Krahn each scored six. Kizer finished with five. Schols also handed out a game-high six assists.
The Bees will next compete in the Clarke Tip-Off Classic in Dubuque. SAU will face host Clarke Friday night before battling No. 23 Bethel (Ind.) Saturday afternoon.
