Bees gets overtime victory to end season at .500 mark

St. Ambrose was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor and hit 7-of-8 from the line in overtime to end the season with a 94-86 win at St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday afternoon.

The Bees finish 15-15 overall and 9-11 in the CCAC, a game out of a two-way tie for seventh place and the last spot in the upcoming conference tournament.

After two late Saint free throws sent the game into overtime at 77-77, Jalen Jones started the extra session with a layup. Jake Meeske followed with a layup of his own for a 81-77 advantage.

Nursing a 81-78 lead, St. Ambrose broke things open with back-to-back 3-pointers from Meeske and John Kerr with two minutes left.

From there, SAU hit its first seven attempts from the line, five of those coming from Lee Hardrick, to close out the victory.

The game never appeared headed to overtime. After building a 43-33 halftime lead, the Bees extended to a 19-point lead at 61-42 on a Greg Wagner basket just over five minutes into the second half.

But St. Francis (10-19, 7-13 CCAC) shot better than 55 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of regulation and actually took a 75-71 lead with three minutes to play.

Free throws from Kerr and a layup from Hardrick knotted the score at 75-75 before Kerr gave St. Ambrose a 77-75 lead with two more free throws with 27 seconds left. That led the the final Saint free throws to force overtime.

Seven different Bees scored at least seven points in the win.

Kerr led the way with a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double. Meeske scored 16, Jones had 13, Dylan Kaczmarek finished with 11 and Hardrick added 10.
