St. Ambrose grabs 11th home win on Senior Day

Playing for the final time inside Lee Lohman Arena, the seven St. Ambrose seniors helped the Bees earn their 11th home win of the season and stay alive in the hunt for a CCAC Tournament berth with a 68-57 win over Cardinal Stritch Saturday.

Twelve of the 13 Bees who played scored at least one point to move the team's record to 14-14 overall and 8-10 in the CCAC.

With two games remaining, St. Ambrose sits in ninth place in the tightly-bunched conference, sitting just outside a top-eight finish needed to qualify for the league's postseason tournament. The Bees are just a game behind eighth-place Olivet Nazarene and two games back of a three-way tie for fifth place.

After leading 35-32 at the half after three late Alex Portwood free throws, the Bees got back-to-back 3-pointers from John Kerr and Lee Hardrick to open up a 41-32 lead early in the second half.

Seconds later, following a Cardinal Stritch basket, Blake Buls knocked down a jumper and Jalen Jones scored inside for a double-digit lead. Five minutes into the half, Kerr completed a three-point play for a 48-36 edge and the margin remained in double figures the rest of the way.

The all-senior starting five for the Bees, consisting of Hardrick, Buls, John Payan, Garrett Faris and Greg Wagner, combined for 30 points. The two other seniors - Tyler Hilby and Max Fricke - came off the bench after the team honored its senior class prior to tip-off.

Kerr led the team with 18 points and seven rebounds. Buls finished with 10 points and seven boards. Wagner scored eight points and Hardrick netted seven.

But now after finishing 11-3 overall and 8-2 in the CCAC at home, St. Ambrose will fight for a postseason bid on the road.

St. Ambrose will visit Trinity Christian Wednesday night before wrapping up the regular season at St. Francis next Saturday.
