Jaguars hit 20 threes to take down the Bees

After hitting 14-of-24 3-pointers to beat St. Ambrose earlier in the season, No. 18 Governors State took it to another level Wednesday night.

The Jaguars (20-7, 16-1 CCAC) connected on 20-of-34 from beyond the arc, a 58.8-percent clip, to defeat the Bees 101-83 in University Park, Ill. The win, GSU's 11th in a row, clinched the CCAC regular-season title for the Jaguars.

Most of the damage was done in the first half as Governors State hit an amazing 12-of-13 threes for a 54-35 halftime lead.

Trailing 61-41 three minutes in, SAU (13-14, 7-10) did make a game of it early in the second half. Jake Meeske scored five straight points; John Kerr, Dylan Kaczmarek and Jalen Jones each scored; and Blake Buls hit two free throws for a 13-0 run that pulled the Bees to within 61-54 with just under 15 minutes to play.

But the Jaguars answered with, what else, a 3-pointer to get the lead back to double digits and the Bees never seriously threatened again.

Five different Jaguars each hit at least three 3-pointers in the win. That, along with SAU committing 21 turnovers compared to GSU's eight, more than made up for a 57-31 St. Ambrose rebounding advantage.

Meeske led the Bees with 19 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Buls finished with 14 points and seven boards, and Kerr posted 10 points and 14 rebounds for his seventh double-double of his freshman campaign. Warren Allen came off the bench to net 11 points. Jones dropped in nine points and Kaczmarek registered seven points and a game-high eight assists.

SAU will conclude the home portion of its schedule Saturday as the Bees host Cardinal Stritch at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
