SAU misses chance to get to .500 in CCAC

The Bees hit 10-of-19 3-pointers, but struggled inside the arc in a 70-59 loss at Holy Cross Saturday afternoon.

St. Ambrose shot just 13-of-33 on two-point attempts (39.4 percent) and shot a miserable 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from the line in dropping to 9-9 overall and 4-6 in the CCAC.

The struggles started early as SAU found itself in a 10-point halftime hole at 30-20 after shooting just 7-of-22 over the game's first 20 minutes. The Bees also committed 15 first-half turnovers but were able to stay within striking distance thanks to a 20-12 rebounding advantage and four 3-pointers, one each from Dylan Kaczmarek, Lee Hardrick, Greg Wagner and John Kerr.

In a game in which they never led, the Bees got within a single possession several times in the second half. A Jalen Jones 3-pointer cut the margin to 40-38, the closest St. Ambrose had been since facing a 9-8 deficit less than five minutes into the contest.

After Holy Cross (12-8, 6-4 CCAC) pushed the lead back to seven, SAU again fought back. Baskets from Warren Allen and Tyler Hilby were followed by a Wagner triple to cut the deficit to 50-47 midway through the second half. The Saints scored on their ensuing possession, and after Jones misfired on a three, Holy Cross knocked down a 3-pointer for a 55-47 advantage. Minutes later, the margin was double figures and the Bees never threatened again.

Jones (12) and Kerr (11) were the only Bees to score in double figures. Hardrick came off the bench to finish with nine points and a game-high seven assists. Kaczmarek scored eight points, Allen netted seven and Hilby and Wagner each recorded six.

St. Ambrose will play three home games next week, beginning with a non-conference battle with Clarke Monday at 3 p.m. The week will also include home games against Judson Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Indiana South Bend Saturday at 3 p.m.
