Five Bees score in double figures in 97-95 win over Eagles

Five Bees scored in double figures and St. Ambrose battled down the stretch to hold on to a 97-95 win over Robert Morris Wednesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

SAU seemingly had the high-scoring, back-and-forth affair locked up when Jalen Jones knocked down a free throw for a 97-91 lead with six seconds remaining. But with four-tenths of a second left, the Bees were whistled for a foul and then a technical. The Eagles hit all four free throws and had a shot at the win, but a hurried 3-pointer from the wing was well off the mark, giving St. Ambrose its fourth win in five games.

The Bees had numerous heroes down the stretch in winning a game in which neither team held a lead of more than six points all night.

SAU rallied from one of those six-point deficits, at 76-70, with seven minutes to go. A 9-0 run, which included seven free throws, helped the Bees take a 79-76 lead with just over five minutes to play. From there, Blake Buls scored inside for an 81-77 advantage.

Tyler Hilby hit a 3-pointer for a 84-79 lead with four minutes left. After the Eagles cut the lead to a single point on two separate occasions, both Lee Hardrick and John Kerr hit big threes to extend the lead to four points. Hardrick scored seven of his 18 points over the final 3:26 and Kerr's 3-pointer gave SAU a 94-90 lead with a minute to go.

At that point, St. Ambrose won it from the line. Hardrick went 2-for-2 before a defensive stop led to Jones' late free throw.

The Bees shot 53.7 percent from the floor for the game, and topped 50 percent shooting in each half, including a better than 58-percent mark in the second half (18-of-31).

Buls was another who came up big in the second half, scoring 16 of his 19 points after the break. He finished 7-of-10 from the floor.

Jones led St. Ambrose with 21 points. Warren Allen finished with 15 points and Kerr had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Jones (nine rebounds), Buls (eight) and Allen (eight) each narrowly missed a double-double and helped contribute to the Bees' 47-33 advantage on the boards. That helped offset SAU's 31 turnovers coming against RMU's pressure defense.

Hilby contributed nine points in the win.

SAU, above .500 now with a 9-8 record, will next visit Holy Cross Saturday. The Bees are 4-5 in the conference.
