Kerr scores 27 to help St. Ambrose snap recent slide

John Kerr scored a game-high 27 points and St. Ambrose withstood a late Trinity Christian charge to pull away late for a 76-65 win Saturday afternoon in Lee Lohman Arena.

The victory snapped a five-game losing streak and moved the Bees to 6-7 overall and 2-4 in the CCAC.

Yet despite Kerr's big day and a second-half spurt from Jake Meeske that helped SAU to a 14-point lead with 11 minutes to play, St. Ambrose found itself deadlocked at 60-60 with Trinity Christian with 6:40 left.

After the Trolls' pieced together a 14-0 run to tie the game, Kerr immediately scored inside to put SAU back in front. That was the start of a 12-2 Bee run with Kerr and Greg Wagner combining for 10 of those 12 points. Blake Buls closed the run and sealed the win with an offensive rebound and putback to put the lead at 72-62 with 30 seconds to play.

Meeske hit four free throws in the final 16 seconds to end the scoring.

Kerr finished 10-of-13 from the floor in scoring in double figures for the ninth time in his freshman season. He also pulled down eight boards.

Meeske, who attempted just one field goal in a scoreless first half, finished with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He packed 11 of his points into a three-and-a-half minute stretch midway through the second half. He hit two 3-pointers, converted a three-point play and scored on a driving layup to help SAU extend what had been a 45-39 lead to 60-46 with 11 minutes left.

Lee Hardrick came off the bench to add 13 points. Buls added seven points and five rebounds.

St. Ambrose shot better than 48 percent from the floor while holding the Trolls to a 36-percent mark. The Bees also finished with a 40-27 rebounding advantage in the win.

The two teams combined to shoot 27-of-28 from the line.

Next Saturday, SAU will host St. Francis (Ill.). Tip off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
