Late run comes up short as SAU drops fourth in a row

John Kerr had 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 75-72 loss at Cardinal Stritch Saturday afternoon.

The Bees, who had trailed by 11 with three minutes to play, made a late charge before falling for the fourth straight time to drop to 5-6 overall and 1-4 in the CCAC.

Down by as many as 16 points with under six minutes to go, St. Ambrose chipped away.

A Blake Buls jumper cut the deficit to 70-64 with 1:24 left. After Cardinal Stritch (6-5, 2-1 CCAC) hit 1-of-2 from the line, Lee Hardrick buried a jumper to close the gap to 71-66. The teams traded free throws before a Jake Meeske jumper brought the Bees to within 73-69 with 11 seconds left.

Another Wolves' free throw was followed by a Hardrick 3-pointer to make it a two-point game. With three seconds remaining, Cardinal Stritch hit 1-of-2 from the line but tracked down an offensive rebound on the miss to deny the Bees a chance to tie.

Behind Kerr, three other Bee starters - Buls, Hardrick and Meeske - each scored 13 points. Meeske added seven boards and five assists.

While the four players combined for 55 points, the SAU bench contributed just 15 points on 5-of-21 shooting. The Cardinal Stritch reserves totaled 44 points.

St. Ambrose will look to snap its four-game slide at Mount Mercy Wednesday night.
