Staples and Coleman etch names in record book as Bees roll

Tomele Staples and Jalen Coleman added their names to the St. Ambrose record book in leading St. Ambrose to a 50-22 win over Clarke in Dubuque, Iowa, Saturday afternoon.

Staples completed 31-of-44 passes to set a new school record with 452 passing yards. That broke the previous record of 438 yards set by Chad Duffin against Olivet Nazarene in 1997. Staples is just the fifth Bee quarterback to throw for at least 400 yards in a game, joining Duffin, Eric Williamson (434 vs. Olivet Nazarene in 2012), Jeff Kietzman (431 vs. William Penn in 2005) and Patrick Smith (404 vs. Dakota State in 2015).

His six touchdown passes left him one shy of a school-record seven set by Williamson in 2012 and matched by Tom Casey against Judson in 2022. His 31 completions are the eighth-most in program history.

Coleman was the beneficiary, hauling in 13 receptions for 244 yards and four scores.

Only Beau Foiles (293 yards vs. Iowa Wesleyan in 2009) and Andre Banks (286 yards for Saint Xavier in 2001) have posted more receiving yards in a game in school history. Coleman's four touchdown catches are second only to Zach Grant's five at St. Ambrose. The 13 receptions are tied for the fifth-most in a contest.

The duo connected for three long touchdowns in the second quarter alone Saturday.

After Staples found Maximo Vasquez for a six-yard touchdown pass (Clarke blocked and returned the extra point for a two-point conversion) to account for the only points in the opening quarter, Staples and Coleman went to work.

A fourth-down stop near midfield allowed Staples to find Coleman for a 47-yard touchdown on a one-play drive early in the second quarter. Clarke (1-9, 0-5 Heart) answered to pull within 13-8.

SAU scored the final 21 points of the half. Staples hit Coleman on a 35-yard strike and later a 29-yard scoring pass to extend the lead to 27-8 with 1:19 left. After the defense forced a quick three-and-out, Kameron Bohnsack brought in a 40-yard touchdown pass from Staples to up the lead to 34-8 at the half.

Staples and Coleman paired for a 12-yard touchdown that put St. Ambrose in front 41-8 in the third quarter.

The Clarke quarterback was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone for a safety, and Calvin Lee scored on a two-yard touchdown run to account for the final Bee points. The Pride tacked on two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Joe Namio converted six extra points on the day.

Bohnsack quietly caught six passes for 103 yards. Braden Downs and Charles Jones each had 33 yards receiving. Brennan Wilson, Jake Ackman, Vasquez and Lee also had catches in the win.

Jaedyn Price led the team with seven yards on the ground.

A strong defensive effort that forced three turnovers was also overshadowed.

Brock Mason intercepted a pair of passes and Jamari Chaney forced a fumble that Fikayo Afolarin recovered. Mason is the first Bee to have multiple interceptions in a game since Liam Kelly picked off two passes at St. Francis (Ill.) during the 2021 campaign.

Colin Gudella posted a team-best seven taciles. Jake Strater recorded six. Mason, Chaney and Joe Reinhart were each in on four tackles. Reinhart and Chaney were credited with 1.5 sacks each. Rolando Sepulveda, Grant Macke and Jeffrey Speer made three tackles apiece. Speer and Caleb Ballard each registered half a sack.

St. Ambrose (3-7, 1-4 Heart) will close the season next Saturday against Peru State on Senior Day.
