St. Ambrose takes control early in win over Trojans

It took just 143 seconds for St. Ambrose to take total control of what had been a scoreless game midway through the first quarter Saturday.

In that time, the Bees scored three touchdowns and they never looked back in an eventual 52-14 home win over Trinity International.

Dino Borrelli threw for 295 yards and five touchdowns in his first collegiate varsity start as the Bees got contributions across the board to move to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the MSFA Midwest League.

His first touchdown was a 25-yarder to Matthew Coovert to give SAU a 7-0 lead 10 minutes into the game (video below, courtesy SAUtv). A Reed Rollette interception, one of five Bee picks on the day, and 46-yard return led to a nine-yard touchdown run from Isaiah Hawkins less than a minute later. St. Ambrose got the ball back after a three-and-out and Borrelli connected with Jake Osterberger on a 16-yard touchdown pass to up the lead to 21-0.

Griffin Zajac set a school record with a 95-yard interception for a score in the opening minutes of the second quarter (video below, courtesy SAUtv).

Borrelli added touchdown tosses to Vince Vignali (80 yards), Tanner Champley (7 yards) and Garret Tiarks (5 yards) in the quarter to extend the lead to 49-7 at the half.

St. Ambrose rolled up 353 yards of offense in that first half before just adding a 41-yard Tom Gillen field goal in the second half.

Borrelli completed 24-of-33 passes before giving way to Aaron Kussmann, who completed 2-of-4 passes for 18 yards.

Fifteen different Bees caught at least one pass with J.D. Villafuerte leading the way with six receptions for 59 yards. Champley caught four balls while Coovert, Tiarks and Patrick Bond each hauled in two catches.

Tiarks also led the team with 13 carries for 61 yards. Alec Buob rushed nine times for 35 yards, and Michael Gerischer and Borrelli each finished with 20 yards on the ground.

Defensively, the Bees forced six turnovers. Kobe Easley, Ethan Miebach and Braxton Criss joined Rollette and Zajac with interceptions and Winfrid Cooper recovered a fumble.

Parker Henderson had two sacks among his three tackles-for-loss. Miebach had the team's other sack. Shaun Zachary led St. Ambrose with eight total tackles. Jeremiah Jackson Sr. and Liam Markham were each in on six tackles.

SAU will close the regular season next Saturday at home against Olivet Nazarene. The Senior Day game will kickoff at 1 p.m.
