Bees outscore Eagles 37-27

Jake Romani threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns to help St. Ambrose to a 37-27 win at Robert Morris Illinois Saturday night.

Isaiah Hawkins and Jake Osterberger each added a rushing touchdown as the Bees snapped a two-game skid to move to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the MSFA Midwest League.

SAU used big plays to overcome three different deficits in the victory of a game that featured 28 total penalties. After Robert Morris (2-7, 1-3 MSFA) went ahead 21-16 with just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter, St. Ambrose scored on its next three possessions.

Hawkins' 14-yard touchdown run with 2:25 left in the third put the Bees in front 23-21. After forcing a three-and-out, St. Ambrose got the ball back and facing a fourth-and-3 from its own 40-yard line, used an 18-yard run from Adam Sigwarth on a fake punt to keep its drive alive. Romani had a 21-yard rush before tossing a 20-yard pass to Tanner Champley, setting up Osterberger's 1-yard touchdown run to up the lead to 30-21.

RMU pulled to within 30-27 midway through the fourth. On third and five from near midfield, Romani connected with Matthew Coovert on a 39-yard pass. On the next play, Romani threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Champley to give St. Ambrose some breathing room at 37-27 with 6:05 left.

From there, the defense took over. The Bees got a pair of fourth-down stops and Kobe Easley intercepted a pass to shut down the Eagles on their final three possessions.

Romani completed 22-of-44 passes for his 319 yards. His first two touchdown passes came in the opening quarter - a 10-yarder to Vince Vignali and a 50-yarder to Coovert. Those touchdowns helped offset a pair of 93-yard Robert Morris touchdowns - one on a pass, the other on a kickoff return - in a back-and-forth first quarter.

In a quiet second quarter, Taylor O'Donnell gave the Bees a 16-14 lead with a sack in the end zone for a safety. O'Donnell led the team with eight total tackles, including two for losses. Bernard Buhake was in on five tackles, including a sack, lifting his team-leading total to 7.5

Champley led the receiving corps with eight catches for 84 yards. Vignali had five receptions for 72 yards while Tom Macari caught three passes.

Osterberger had a team-leading 46 yards on the ground.

SAU returns home to host Trinity International next Saturday. Kickoff at Brady Street Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
