Bees record first shutout since 2013 in weather-delayed win

It was worth the wait.

In a game that started Friday and finished Sunday afternoon, St. Ambrose allowed just 178 yards of total offense in shutting out Lindenwood-Belleville 26-0. It was the Bees' first shutout since a 66-0 win over Concordia (Mich.) on Sept. 28, 2013.

Strong storms forced Friday's postponement after a scoreless few minutes.

When play resumed Sunday in Belleville, Ill., SAU immediately pieced together an 11-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jake Romani to Tom Macari.

Later in the quarter, Jake Osterberger scored his first of two rushing touchdowns, this one from a yard out to up the lead to 13-0.

Tom Gillen kicked a pair of field goals, from 35 and 45 yards, before Osterberger ended the scoring with a three-yard run with less than three minutes to play.

Romani completed 26-of-39 passes for 305 yards. Vince Vignali caught six of those passes for 108 yards. Macari had seven catches for 79 yards while J.D. Villafuerte hauled in six passes for 51 yards.

Osterberger rushed for 84 yards on 24 carries and Isaiah Hawkins carried the ball 12 times for 61 yards.

But the story of the weekend was the defense.

The Bees allowed just 126 yards through the air and 52 yards on the ground on 30 carries, for an average of 1.7 yards per rush.

SAU collected six sacks among its 11 tackles for loss, led by Bernard Buhake's 1.5 sacks. Taylor O'Donnell had a team-high 12 tackles and a sack and Ryan Zitkus was in on seven stops. Cody Kieffer, Greg Burnett Jr., Braxton Criss and Jacob Holmes were also each in on a sack. Jake Schramm picked off a pass in the win.

The victory sets up a big game next week as the Bees will visit No. 1 Saint Francis (Ind.) Saturday afternoon.
