Fourth-quarter rally comes up short in season finale

Fourth-quarter rally comes up short in season finale

The St. Ambrose offense finally got moving in the fourth quarter.

But two long touchdown drives weren't enough to overcome an early deficit as the Bees dropped their season finale at Olivet Nazarene 20-17 Saturday afternoon in Bourbonnais, Ill.

SAU finished the year 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the MSFA Midwest League.

Trailing 20-2 and with just 107 yards of total offense entering the fourth, the Bees finally came alive.

Jake Romani engineered a 12-play, 90-yard drive, which included a 27-yard completion to Tanner Champley on a 4th-and-5 play, to get SAU to the ONU 6-yard line. Three plays later, Romani threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Eli Petty to pull the Bees to within 20-9.

The St. Ambrose defense forced a punt and Romani went back to work. This time he marched the Bees 70 yards over 12 plays. Along the way, he had another fourth-down completion to Champley, this one going for 14 yards on 4th-and-4. Romani's 26th and what proved-to-be final completion of the day went to Jake Osterberger for a four-yard touchdown. He added a two-point conversion toss to Petty to cut the deficit to 20-17 with 4:07 left.

But the Bees were unable to get the ball back.

Olivet Nazarene (6-5, 2-3 MSFA) picked up a pair of first downs and was able to run out the clock to hang on for the win.

SAU was hurt by three turnovers, including two fumbles that led to ONU points.

After the Tigers broke a scoreless tie with a touchdown pass five seconds into the second quarter, J.D. Villafuerte blocked a punt in the end zone for a safety to get the Bees on the board at 7-2 early in the third.

But on their ensuing possession, the Bees fumbled, giving Olivet Nazarene a short field leading to a field goal and a 10-2 deficit. After allowing another field goal to fall behind 13-2, SAU gave up another touchdown when the ONU kickoff rolled into the end zone and was recovered by the Tigers and ruled a touchdown instead of a touchback. That gave Olivet the 20-2 advantage it took into the final quarter.

Romani finished 26-of-37 for 264 yards and the two touchdowns. Champley caught six passes for 74 yards. Vince Vignali (73 yards) and Tom Macari (36) each hauled in five passes.

Romani was sacked five times as St. Ambrose finished with minus-10 yards on the ground.

Reed Rollette led a Bee defense that allowed just 261 total yards with 11 tackles. Grant Wallace had 10 tackles, including 3.5 for loss and two sacks. Dillon Valdez intercepted a pass.
