St. Ambrose falls at No. 13 Marian

No. 13 Marian pounded out 391 yards on the ground to run past St. Ambrose 61-24 Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Knights finished with 626 yards of total offense in handing the Bees their fourth straight loss. After opening the year with two wins, SAU is now 2-4 overall.

Marian needed less than two minutes to strike first, carving out a five-play, 64-yard drive, capped by a 22-yard touchdown run.

Trailing 17-0, St. Ambrose got on the board in the second quarter. Jake Platt intercepted a pass and returned it 17 yards to the Marian 15-yard line. Four plays later, Jake Romani found Tanner Champley with a five-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 17-7.

SAU got the ball back after a defensive stop, but an interception set up a short Marian touchdown drive. The Knights also scored on their next possession in building a 31-7 lead at the half.

The lead grew to 47-7 after three quarters. Kenny Rowe provided a second-half highlight for the Bees, kicking a 53-yard field goal in the early stages of the fourth quarter. It is the second-longest made field goal by a Bee in school history, just a yard short of Brian Hanssen's 54-yarder against Saint Xavier during the 1999 season.

Jake Osterberger scored on a one-yard touchdown run and Dino Borrelli threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Chase Ferger later in the quarter to account for the final score.

Roamni completed nine passes for 117 yards and the touchdown before giving way to Borrelli, whose only pass was the long touchdown to Ferger. Ferger finished with three catches for 115 yards while Champley caught five passes for 54 yards. Baylee Hopps rushed for a team-high 57 yards on 19 carries.

Defensively, Platt led the way with 11 solo tackles. Jake Schramm was in on nine tackles and broke up a pair of passes. Travis Warden and Chris Overton were each credited with seven tackles.

The Bees are off next week before returning to MSFA Midwest League action with a game at No. 11 Saint Xavier on Oct. 21.
