Streak hits six before Bees stumble in series finale

After scoring double-digit runs in five straight games, the Bee offense came back to Earth Saturday. But Brad Niedzwiedz made sure the team's winning streak continued anyway.

St. Ambrose mustered just four total hits but thanks to Niedzwiedz, that was enough in a 3-1 win over Trinity Christian at NelsonCorp Field in Clinton, Iowa. SAU's six-game winning streak was snapped in the second game though as TCC picked up a 15-8 win.

Niedzwiedz was in control throughout the opener, allowing just seven hits while striking out seven in the complete-game effort.

The only run he surrendered came in the top of the second as the Trolls took an early 1-0 lead.

SAU got the equalizer in the bottom of the third as Bryce Vorwald's ground out allowed Quinn Flanagan to score to knot the score at 1-1. Then in the fifth, Jake Pauley beat out an infield hit, and when the shortstop's throw got away, both Brandon Roth and Flanagan scored.

Niedzwiedz ran into a little trouble in the sixth, allowing back-to-back one-out singles. After a ground out moved both runners into scoring position, the Bee left-hander got a strikeout to end the threat. He retired the side in order in the ninth to cap his win.

Roth, Brandon Matias and Kevin Niedzwiedz also had hits in the victory.

Eight errors plagued St. Ambrose in Game 2. The miscues allowed the Trolls to score 10 unearned runs in their 15-8 win.

Trinity Christian scored in each of the first five innings, including a six-run fourth, to open a 14-3 lead. SAU stayed alive by pushing across four runs in the seventh before the two teams traded runs over the last two frames.

Matias homered as part of a two-hit game. Roth, Flanagan and Kevin Niedzwiedz also collected two hits. Vorwald, Pauley, Joey Fitzgerald Jr. and Caden Thode also picked up hits.

Pauley drove in a pair of runs while five other Bees - Matias, Flanagan, Thode, Kevin Niedzwiedz and Jeremy Conforti - each had one RBI.

Joe Turek was charged with the loss after allowing five runs, only two earned, over two innings. Michael Betancourt, Nathaniel Johnson, Danny Molony, Chase Martin, David Biedron and Sergio Marchizza all pitched in relief.

St. Ambrose (11-13, 8-6 CCAC) will take a break from conference action to play a doubleheader at Grand View Wednesday.
