Bees split high-scoring doubleheader at Mount Mercy

Quinn Flanagan's groundout scored Daniel Laughery in the top of the 12th inning with what proved to be the winning run in an 11-10 victory at Mount Mercy Friday. That came in the second game of a doubleheader after the Bees dropped the seven-inning opener 20-18.

Each team turned to 10 pitchers to get through the twin bill.

It was finally Brad Niedzwiedz who closed things out in the second game. He allowed just one hit over two scoreless innings to earn the victory.

SAU rallied from deficits of 4-0, 5-1 and 6-2 to take a 10-9 lead in the top of the eighth. Mount Mercy forced extra innings with a run in the bottom half of the eight.

After stranding two runners in the ninth and leaving the bases loaded in the 11th, St. Ambrose pushed across a run in the 12th. Three Bees - Laughery, Brandon Roth and Filip Milatovic - were hit by pitches in the inning to load the bases with one out. Milatovic was forced out at second on Flanagan's grounder to second, but Laughery was able to come home to put SAU in front.

Niedzviedz was able to pitch around a two-out walk to get the split.

Nine Bees had hits, including seven with two. Flanagan, Roth, Jake Pauley, Joey Fitzgerald Jr., Jeremy Conforti, Kevin Niedzwiedz and Bryce Vorwald each had two hits. Brandon Matias and Sam Wampler had the other two. Six of the hits went for extra bases, including a two-run home run by Conforti in the fifth that tied the game at 6-6.

Flanagan drove in four runs while Fitzgerald, Conforti and Matias knocked in a pair apiece. Pauley also had an RBI.

Garrett Vincent started on the mound and went three innings. Noah Chase struck out five while allowing one unearned run over 2 2/3 innings. Justin Lane and David Biedron combined to record five outs before Parker Ruth (2 2/3 innings) and Brad Niedzwiedz closed things out.

The opener saw Mount Mercy lead just 1-0 after two innings. Fitzgerald had a two-run double and Conforti added with an RBI to put St. Ambrose up 3-1 in the third.

With the Bees maintaining the 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, both offenses exploded. The Mustangs put up three in the fourth. SAU responded with five runs to go up 8-4. MMU came right back with seven runs to regain an 11-8 lead. Three St. Ambrose runs in the sixth tied the game before Mount Mercy put up nine runs in the bottom of the frame. A seven-run SAU seventh inning came up two runs short in the 20-18 loss.

Fitzgerald finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. Conforti and Flanagan each had two hits and three RBIs. Roth also had two his. Matias had one hit to go along with three runs scored and two RBIs. Milatovic also had a hit and drove in two.

In a game featuring a combined 20 walks between the two teams, Nathaniel Johnson took the loss in relief. Joe Turek started and was followed by Hayden Kingsbury, Johnson and Ian McGhiey.

SAU, now 3-5 on the season, will return to Mount Mercy for a doubleheader Sunday.
