SAU goes scoreless, bows out of CCAC Tournament

You know what they say, all good things must come to an end.

After an incredible regular season that resulted in a second-place overall finish in CCAC league play, the 2021 Fighting Bees baseball team has played its final game.

The Bees were down to their last life after being relegated to the lower bracket by Saint Xavier on Saturday. In a must-win situation, the second-seeded St. Ambrose failed to get any runs across against the St. Francis Fight Saints, bowing out of the tournament with a final score of 5-0.

St. Francis ended their regular season with an 18-12 league record and entered the CCAC tournament with as the fifth seed. After falling to #4 IUSB in the opening round, the Fighting Saints found their footing in the second round with a 11-1 win over #8 Trinity Christian.

St. Ambrose boasted a 2-1 regular season record over St. Francis heading into Monday's elimination game, but the Fighting Saints figured out an answer.

The Fighting Bees handed the ball to sophomore righty Adam Deal in the elimination game. The Fighting Saints got to Deal early, applying some pressure with two runs in the opening frame.

Despite the early troubles, Deal was able to settle into a groove. Deal kept the Saints off the board for his remaining six innings, limiting their bats to one earned run off six hits, delivering five strikeouts in his seven innings pitched.

Deal was unable to get the run support he needed from the offense. The Bees only managed to scatter four hits in the season-ending defeat.

The Bees showed signs of life early, with Nate Villagomez drawing a two-out walk and Liam Dennehy roping a single down the left field line to get two runners onboard in the top of the third. However, a foulout to the USF first baseman thwarted St. Ambrose's biggest threat.

Nick Hernandez and Conor OHara both came in for relief in the final inning. Deal was credited with the loss.

The CCAC Tournament will conclude on Tuesday (or Wednesday if an additional game is necessary). St. Francis moves on to play #7 Roosevelt in another elimination game on Monday. The winner of that game will face the winner of #6 Saint Xavier and #1 Olivet Nazarene.

St. Ambrose ended their season with a 27-23 record.
