Bees conquer Lynx with another nine-run inning

The Fighting Bees put up their second nine-run inning of the season, this time in game 2 of a doubleheader sweep of the Lincoln Lynx in the penultimate conference matchup for St. Ambrose.

The first nine-spot came just a week ago in a game against Trinity International.

Clinging on to a one-run lead over Lincoln (2-31, 1-20 CCAC) heading into the fourth inning, the Bees unloaded for nine runs in the blink of an eye. Liam Dennehy, Cooper Huckabone and Cole Aughenbaugh all got two at-bats during the bottom of the fourth, with Dennehy crossing home plate twice in the same inning.

The nine-run inning pushed the St. Ambrose lead to 13-3, which allowed starting pitcher Jacob Sciame to settle into a groove. Sciame went six complete innings, only allowing three earned runs and striking out five Lynx to pick up his first win of the season. Casey Hollan came in for relief and pitched a perfect final inning, going 1-2-3 to secure the game 2 victory via mercy rule in the seventh.

Max Rumpf roped in a game-high three RBIs on 2-for-2 hitting. Dennehy, Mike Snow and Gabriel Panza all tallied two RBIs each.

It was a similar story in the game 1 of the doubleheader, with another big inning powering the Bees to victory.

The Lynx pounced on the ball early, scratching two runs across in the opening frame. However, this would the be the only inning they would secure a run in. Junior lefty James Cormier bounced back from the rough first inning to shut down Lincoln for the rest of the game, pitching a complete game gem. Cromier struck out six batters and only surrendered one walk in his fifth win of the season.

Cormier got all of the run support he would need in the bottom of the third, where the Bees' offense was able to put four runs on the board thanks to some errant pitching from Lincoln and some solid plate discipline from the Bees. Rumpf, Brenden Butler, and Mike Coughlin were all able to tally an RBI by drawing a walk.

The score deadlocked at 5-2 for the final three innings and the Bees were able to complete another season sweep of a conference opponent.

St. Ambrose (26-18, 22-5 CCAC) now sits alone at the top of the conference standings. The Bees will play their final regular season matchup against IU-South Bend in a three game series on May 1 in South Bend, Ind.
