Bees split two in battle of CCAC leaders

Bees split two in battle of CCAC leaders

After a rainy weekend postponed a bunch of baseball action, the St. Ambrose baseball team squared off with Judson in a doubleheader matchup between the top two teams in the CCAC.

The Bees brought the power with them on the trip to Elgin, launching three home runs in the game 1 victory.

The Fighting Bees found themselves in a hole early, giving up four quick runs in the bottom of the second. St. Ambrose responded right away with two runs in the top of the third. Mike Coughlin started the inning off with a single to left, followed by a Gabriel Panza moon shot to left center, his fourth homer of the year.

The Bees weren't done playing the long ball just yet. Cole Aughenbaugh launched his sixth home run of the season to lead off the top of the fourth. Brenden Butler followed up with a singled to centerfield. Butler was moved around to third on a Max Rumpf groundout and a Brenden Alsup single. Coughlin punched him in on an RBI groundout to second base, tying the game at four-all.

Another leadoff home run was sent flying over the wall, this time off the bat of Liam Dennehy in the top of the fifth. This go-ahead home run would prove to be the winning run for the Fighting Bees, as they would push three more runs across in the top of the sixth and blank the Eagles for the remainder of the game. The Bees secured the game 1 victory with a final score of 8-4.

Colton Carr went 6 1/3 innings as the St. Ambrose starter, only allowing one earned run and hurling three punch-outs. Carr picked up the win, improving his record to 5-2 on the year. Conor OHara pitched the final two outs of the game, inducing a groundball from Judson that resulted in a game-ending 4-6-3 double play. This was the first save of the season for OHara.

Game 2 of the doubleheader was a heartbreaker for the Fighting Bees. A back-and-forth affair with four lead changes ultimately came to an end off of a walk-off three run homer from Judson to hand the Bees their second conference loss of the season.

Dennehy hit his second home run of the day in the game 2 defeat, pushing his season total to three. Cooper Huckabone and Nate Villagomez had two RBI's each to go with the two RBI's from Dennehy's longball.

Michael Dudek got the start for the Fighting Bees in game 2, going 4 1/3 and striking out three. Nick Hernandez pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief of Dudek, allowing only one earned run and striking out three. OHara came into the game in the bottom of the ninth to try to get the Bees out of a jam, but it proved to be too tall of a task. Hernandez was credited with the loss.

The split doubleheader with Judson keeps the Bees at an even .500 record, 15-15. The Bees stay atop the CCAC standings with a conference record of 11-2, followed closely by Judson in second (13-3). St. Ambrose will host another conference opponent in Roosevelt on Wednesday. The two teams will complete the game that was suspended on March 17, with the game heading into the bottom of the sixth and St. Ambrose leading 3-0. They will then play a full nine-inning game.
