Stellar baserunning propels Bees to 1-0 start in CCAC

After a relatively slow start, the Bees have started to heat up.

The St. Ambrose baseball team hit the road to open up their CCAC season against the Roosevelt Lakers, where some stellar baserunning propelled the Bees to a 1-0 start in conference play.

The Bees stuck to the script of getting out to an early lead. Kyel Alexander drew a leadoff walk to start the game and sequentially stole second. Shawn Rigsby grounded out to the second-baseman, moving Alexander to third. A sacrifice fly to centerfield from Cole Aughenbaugh knocked in Alexander to give the Bees a quick 1-0 lead.

In the next frame, Brenden Alsup hustled to first on a groundball hit to the shortstop for an infield single. Mike Coughlin was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base with one out. Liam Dennehy dropped a sac bunt to move the runners to second and third, but a few errant throws allowed Alsup to wheel around the bases to extend the Bees lead.

Roosevelt would rally to tie the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bees would retaliate with another great performance on the base paths. Alexander lead off the sixth by reaching base on a throwing error by the third-baseman. With Rigsby at the plate, a failed pickoff attempt allowed Alexander to dash all the way to third, putting the go-ahead run 90 feet from home. Rigsby rose to the occasion and knocked in Alexander to score the game-winning run for the Fighting Bees.

Colton Carr threw a complete seven-inning game to pick up his second win of the season. Carr surrendered zero walks and struck out seven.

Wednesday's matchup with Roosevelt was slated as a doubleheader. The second game had gotten underway, with the Bees jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead. However, some inclement weather postponed the action. The game will resume on April 14th when Roosevelt travels to Davenport for their second conference matchup.

On a quick turnaround, the Bees will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. on Friday to take on the 12th-ranked Indiana Insititute of Technology for two days of doubleheaders
