Bees topple Trolls, split two games with Aquinas

The St. Ambrose baseball team is starting to find their rhythm, picking up two wins in three games during the weekend road trip.

The Fighting Bees first took on the Trolls of Trinity Christian in a nine-inning game, a game where the Bees found themselves down early. The Bees trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning. Gabriel Panza started the inning with a leadoff walk. Mike Snow came in to pinch run, was pushed to third on a Liam Dennehy single and stole home to get the Bees on the board. Dennehy would eventually score on a fielding error by Trinity Christian's second baseman to tie the game at two apiece.

The Bees would take the lead in the top of the sixth off of some great baserunning by Brenden Alsup. The inning kicked off with an Alsup single, followed by a sac groundout from Mike Coughlin moving Alsup into scoring position. Alsup took third and stole home on a pair of wild pitches to give the Bees a 3-2 lead.

After the Trolls tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, the St. Ambrose pitching would stymie the scoring for the Trolls for the remainder of the game. Cooper Huckabone's hot bat came alive in the top of the ninth with an RBI single knocking in Shawn Rigsby to score the game-winning run.

Collin Rogiers struck out two of three in the bottom of the ninth to notch his first save of the season. James Cormier came in for relief in the seventh inning and was credited with the win, his second of the year.

St. Ambrose then took on the Saints in a neutral-site doubleheader, where a seventh-inning rally in the first game led the Bees to their fourth win of the season.

The Bees were facing a 4-1 deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth. Cole Aughenbaugh belted a leadoff double and was knocked in by an Alsup RBI single to get the Bees within two. In the final inning, Panza and Dennehy drew back-to-back leadoff walks to get things started for the Bees. With Brock Lakin pinch-running for Panza, Kyel Alexander dropped a sac bunt to put two Bees in scoring position. Rigsby then walked to load the bases with one out. A wild pitch from Aquinas scored Lakin and moved Dennehy to third. Huckabone sent a sacrifice flyball to center, scoring Dennehy to tie the game at four. Brenden Butler then reached base on a center-fielder error and Rigsby came across to score the game-winnning run.

Jack Golenzer came in for relief in the bottom of the fourth. Golenzer threw three-and-a-third innings, only giving up one earned run on five hits to pick up his first win of the season.

The Bees had an explosive first-inning in the game 2 loss, putting up four runs in the top of the first. However, the Saints would respond with nine unanswered runs to take down the Bees 9-4.

Nate Villagomez went 2-for-3 and with an RBI and Butler added two RBIs of his own in the game 2 defeat. Mitch Thompson was credited with the loss.

The winning weekend improves the Bees to 4-9 on the season. The Bees will hit the road to take on Roosevelt in a doubleheader on March 17.
