Huckabone's heroics give Bees first win of the season

The St. Ambrose baseball team traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa this weekend to take on the Mount Mercy Mustangs in a pair of doubleheaders. After dropping both games on Saturday, the Bees turned around and swept Sunday's slate.

The Bees picked up their first win of the season in the opening game on Sunday behind a three-run homer from Cooper Huckabone late in the game. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth and the Bees trailing 0-1, Shawn Rigsby singled on a ground ball up the middle followed by a Cole Aughenbaugh walk to bring Huckabone to the plate. Huckabone launched a game-winning three-run shot down the left field line to give the Bees a 3-1 lead.

The Bees would hold on to win the game 3-2. Colton Carr threw a complete game, only allowing one earned run in his first win of the season.

The Fighting Bees would continue their strong pitching in their second game of the day, shutting out the Mustangs en route to a 4-0 victory for their second win of the season. Brenden Butler went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, all three of which came off of a three-run homer in the top of the fourth inning to build St. Ambrose's lead. Huckabone knocked in Kyel Alexander on a ground ball to first base earlier in the fourth to give the Bees the lead, a lead that they wouldn't give up.

James Cormier threw a complete-game shutout to pick up his first win of the season. Cormier limited the Mustangs to four hits, did not allow a single walk and struck out seven.

St. Ambrose couldn't keep up with Mt. Mercy in the first game on Saturday, with the Mustangs putting up 12 quick runs to keep the game out of reach. The Bees struck first after an RBI sac fly from Aughenbaugh scored Alexander to give the Bees a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. However, the Mustangs retaliated with six runs of their own. The Bees couldn't find an answer and would lose the game 5-12.

Mike Coughlin went 2-for-2 and scored a run in Saturday's game 1 defeat. Jack Golenzer was credited with the loss.

The Bees were hanging on to a 3-1 lead in the the second game on Saturday, but some late game heroics from the Mustangs sank the Bees for a final score of 3-5. St. Ambrose struck first yet again after a Rigsby single knocked in Alexander who got in scoring postion after a single of his own, followed by two stolen bases. The Bees led 3-1 heading into the final frame, but two quick runs from Mt. Mercy tied it up and a two-run walk off homer handed the Bees their eighth loss of the season.

Despite six solid innings only allowing one run, Michael Dudek was credited with the loss.

The Fighting Bees picked up their first two wins of the season to move to 2-8 on the year. St. Ambrose will take the field next at Roosevelt in their CCAC opener on March 13.
