SAU opens 2021 season against eighth-ranked Patriots

The St. Ambrose baseball team opened up its 2021 season with two doubleheaders against the University of the Cumberlands this Wednesday and Thursday.

The Bees fought hard but failed to come up with a win in four games against a tough opponent in the eighth-ranked Patriots.

The bats were quiet for the Bees in the opening day matchups, tallying two hits in the first game and six in the second. Kyel Alexander singled on a bunt in the top of 6th, stole two bases and scored on an error to score the lone run for the Bees in a 6-1 game one loss.

St. Ambrose had a great chance in game two, with a Cole Aughenbaugh double followed by a Cooper Huckabone single to land runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the first. The Bees failed to capitalize, leaving two runners stranded on base after a strikeout.

Colton Carr took the loss for the Bees in the first game and Zach Meyer took the loss in the second.

The best shot at a win came in the third game against Cumberlands. St. Ambrose struck first with a Huckabone sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Alexander to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Cumberlands took the lead after a two-run shot to left in the bottom of the second. Some great pitching from Adam Deal kept the game close, keeping the Patriots quiet with six straight outs. However, the bats for the Bees couldn't keep up after two home runs for Cumberlands in the bottom of the fifth put the game away.

The fourth game of the road trip was over in a hurry, with Cumberlands scoring 14 runs in the first two frames. Adam Gaydos knocked in a run on a pinch-hit RBI single to right in the top of the fourth.

The Bees will take the field on March 6 with another two days of doubleheaders at Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
