St. Ambrose drops doubleheader at Trinity Christian

In what has proven to be the story of the season, St. Ambrose gave up leads in losing both games of a doubleheader at Trinity Christian Saturday afternoon. The Bees fell 10-3 in the opener before losing the nightcap 22-21.

SAU coughed up a 3-0 lead in the first game. Peyton Minder had a single to score Noah Powless and Andrew Rodriguez and Mike Coughlin followed with a run-scoring single of his own to plate Mike Snow as part of a three-run second inning.

But the Bees would collect just three more hits over the final five innings as the Trolls chipped away. Trinity Christian (25-15-1, 16-7-1 CCAC) scored once in the bottom of the second and tied the game with a two-run third. TCC took a 5-3 lead in the fourth and opened up a 9-3 lead after five before tacking on a final run in the sixth.

Tyler Bromer was charged with the loss.

Minder finished with two of SAU's seven hits.

Then came Game 2. A game in which the Bees totaled 21 runs and 21 hits, including four home runs, and still lost thanks to a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning.

St. Ambrose held leads of 8-4, 18-15 and 21-18 as all nine starters had at least one hit and five Bees each had three hits.

Rodriguez, Cole Aughenbaugh and Zach Stroman each had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs. Stroman homered twice. Liam Dennehy and Mike Coughlin also had three hits apiece. Snow finished with two hits and knocked in three.

Snow broke an 18-18 tie with a two-out single to score Braeden Reed in the top of the ninth inning. After Dennehy singled, Gabe Panza extended the lead to 21-18 with a two-run double. But that lead didn't hold up. Trinity Christian pushed across a run to get to within 21-19, and then with two on and two outs, the Trolls hit their third home run of the game to complete the sweep.

Lucas Benda, SAU's fifth pitcher of the game, took the loss.

St. Ambrose, now 11-22 overall and 9-12 in the CCAC, will play a doubleheader against Indiana South Bend Monday afternoon at Saint Xavier in Chicago.
