Coughlin and Ryan support Garcia in win over Titans

Mike Coughlin and Michael Ryan each went 4-for-5 and Fabian Garcia struck out five over six solid innings to help St. Ambrose to a 4-3 win over Indiana South Bend at Route 66 Stadium in Joliet, Ill., Tuesday night.

Coughlin scored a run and drove in two while Ryan knocked in what proved to be the game winner with an RBI single in the sixth.

Ryan's run-scoring hit came on the heels of Coughlin's RBI single and gave the Bees a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth. An inning earlier, Coughlin got SAU on the board with a double to score Liam Dennehy and he later came around to score on Andrew Rodriguez's single as part of a two-run frame.

Garcia allowed six hits over his six innings to pick up the win. Four of those hits, including a three-run home run, came in the bottom of the sixth inning which allowed the Titans to close the gap to 4-3.

But Jack Staten entered in the seventh and closed out the victory. He stranded a pair of Indiana South Bend base runners in both the seventh and eighth innings before retiring the side in order in the ninth to earn the save. Staten struck out three.

Dennehy finished 3-for-4 as he, Coughlin and Ryan combined for 11 of the Bees' 14 hits. Rodriguez, Noah Powless and Peyton Minder also had hits in the win that moved SAU to 11-18 overall and 9-8 in CCAC play.

The two teams' scheduled doubleheader for Wednesday in Clinton, Iowa, has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced. St. Ambrose is now next scheduled to play a single game at Trinity Christian Friday afternoon before heading to Bensenville, Ill., to complete a suspended game against Robert Morris that night. The Bees lead 6-1 in the fifth inning of that contest.
