Bees storm back to take second game at Trinity International

St. Ambrose scored 10 runs over the first three innings, including a six-run third, in a 16-6 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Trinity International Tuesday. The victory salvaged a split as the Trojans won the opener 9-8.

Collin Berry, Andrew Rodriguez, Cole Aughenbaugh, Gabe Panza and Zach Stroman each had two hits in the Bee win. Berry, Rodriguez and Stroman each drove in a pair while Peyton Minder knocked in three, including two on a double in the big third inning.

Panza, Rodriguez, Aughenbaugh and Josh Hlubek also had an RBI in the third that helped St. Ambrose open up a 10-1 lead.

After TIU closed the gap to 10-5, Berry had a big two-out, two-run double in the sixth to extend the lead to 12-5. Mike Snow scored on a balk in the eighth, Braeden Reed scored on a wild pitch in the ninth, and Stroman added a two-run single in the ninth to secure the win.

James Cormier earned the win with 5 1/3 innings of relief of Casey Hollan.

The win eased some of the disappointment in dropping the first game. A game in which St. Ambrose rallied from a 7-1 deficit in the sixth to grab an 8-7 lead before watching Trinity International walk off with a 9-8 victory.

With just three hits through five innings, and facing that six-run deficit, the Bees finally got rolling in the sixth. Jack Cunningham and Aughenbaugh led off with back-to-back walks before Michael Ryan and Rodriguez followed with RBI singles. A third run scored when Noah Powless reached on an error.

An inning later, the Bees took advantage of two TIU errors to plate four runs. Following a two-run Rodriguez single, SAU took the lead when a two-out error allowed two unearned runs to score.

But in the bottom of the seventh, St. Ambrose was undone by an error of its own. The two-out error put a Trojan on second, and it was followed by a single to tie the game and a double that scored the game winner.

Ryan Andrews was tagged with the loss.

Rodriguez finished with two of the Bees' seven hits.

SAU, now 7-18 overall and 5-8 in the CCAC will play a three-game series at Judson beginning with a single game Friday before wrapping up the set with a doubleheader Saturday.
