SAU drops pair at Robert Morris

St. Ambrose dropped to 4-7 in the CCAC after losing a doubleheader at Robert Morris by scores of 3-1 and 4-3 (11 inn.) Saturday.

The Bees pounded out 13 hits but stranded 14 runners in the nightcap. SAU scratched out its three runs on a Gabe Panza sacrifice fly in the second inning, a Peyton Minder RBI double in the fourth and a Cole Aughenbaugh ground out in the ninth.

An inning after tying the game, St. Ambrose had an opportunity to win it in the 10th. Panza and Zach Stroman had back-to-back two-out singles and Minder walked to load the bases. But Michael Ryan grounded out to end the threat.

The Bees stranded another runner in the 11th and the Eagles capitalized in the bottom of the frame. Robert Morris used a one-out single, a stolen base and a double to right to walk off with the 4-3 victory.

Jack Staten took the loss after allowing just four hits and one run over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four. Noah Kesselmayer started and was charged with three runs over 5 2/3 innings.

Minder finished with three hits while Aughenbaugh and Jack Cunningham each collected two.

In the opener, St. Ambrose managed just a single hit - a Noah Powless single in the fifth. That helped the Bees push across their only run. Tyler Franc reached on a passed ball after striking out with one out. Powless followed with his single to right to advance Franc to third. Minder then reached on an error, allowing Franc to score to get SAU to within 2-1.

Robert Morris got that run back in the bottom of the fifth and St. Ambrose didn't threaten over the final two innings.

Tyler Bromer went the distance in a losing effort.

The teams will look to complete their three-game series with a single, nine-inning game Sunday in Bensenville, Ill.
