Bromer pitches Bees to Saturday split with Tigers

Tyler Bromer allowed three hits over seven scoreless innings helping St. Ambrose earn a doubleheader split with a 7-0 win over Olivet Nazarene Saturday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.

Bromer struck out three before giving way to Fabian Garcia, who threw two scoreless frames to complete the shutout.

The win came after the Tigers (15-7, 4-1 CCAC) rallied with a five-run seventh inning to win the first game 5-1.

But behind Bromer, the Bees salvaged the final game of a three-game series. Cole Aughenbaugh gave him a lead with a solo home run to left in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jack Cunningham gave St. Ambrose a little breathing room with a two-run single in the sixth. Mike Coughlin drove in a run with a single in the seventh, his third hit of the game.

SAU broke things open in the bottom of the eighth. Cunningham had an RBI double before later coming around to score on a balk. Peyton Minder had a run-scoring single in the frame to complete the scoring.

Aughenbaugh also gave the Bees an early lead in the first game. His two-out triple into the left-center field gap scored Andrew Rodriguez in the fourth inning.

That run looked like it might stand up as Noah Kesselmayer surrendered just a pair of hits over six innings. But he ran into trouble in the seventh. After he retired the first hitter of the inning, the next five Tigers reached base safely. In all, Olivet Nazarene collected four of its six hits in the inning and pushed across five runs. Liam Dennehy and Zach Stroman had singles in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally ended there.

Kesselymayer, who worked 6 1/3 innings before giving way to Ryan Andrews, was charged with the loss.

The Bees will next play a single nine-inning game at Western Illinois Tuesday before returning to CCAC play with a doubleheader at St. Francis Wednesday.
