Cunningham homers twice, drives in 10 as Bees rout Trojans

Jack Cunningham went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and a grand slam and drove in 10 runs as St. Ambrose opened CCAC play with a 20-1 win over Trinity International in the Bees' home opener Tuesday at the TBK Bank Sports Complex in Bettendorf.

Cunningham had a two-run single in both the first and second innings to help the Bees to a quick 11-0 lead. In the fifth, he launched a grand slam to right before adding a two-run shot to right-center in the sixth. The junior first baseman also scored four runs.

His big day overshadowed other individual performances.

Liam Dennehy finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Peyton Minder ripped a three-run blast to left as part of his two-hit, four-RBI day. Michael Ryan, Braeden Reed and Mike Coughlin also collected two hits. Andrew Rodriguez had an RBI double in his only official at bat, but he also walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored three times.

The beneficiary of the 17-hit attack was Fabian Garcia. The junior right-hander allowed just four hits over five innings. The lone run he allowed, coming in the fifth, was unearned.

The Bees batted around in the five-run first and six-run second innings. They did it again as part of a six-run fifth inning that pushed the lead to 17-1. Cunningham's two-run shot highlighted a three-run sixth inning.

Gabe Panza also had a hit in the victory. Cole Aughenbaugh scored a pair of runs and Josh Hlubek scored an unearned run in the sixth.

Ryan Andrews allowed just a single hit over the final two innings in relief of Garcia.

The Bees (3-9, 1-0 CCAC) will next play a three-game series against Olivet Nazarene beginning with a single nine-inning game in Bourbonnais, Ill., Friday at 3:30 p.m. The teams will then play a doubleheader Saturday at Modern Woodmen Park beginning at 1 p.m.
