SAU Baseball on Spring Break

The St. Ambrose baseball team is in Florida for the annual Spring Break trip.

March 9

The Bees dropped a doubleheader to host Webber International by scores of 4-1 and 9-6. Colton Carr was the hard-luck loser in the opener after allowing just three earned runs over six innings. Braeden Reed's two-out single to right in the fifth inning brought in pinch runner Mike Snow to tie the game. Webber International answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead and added two more runs in the sixth. Michael Ryan, Jack Cunningham and Cole Aughenbaugh also had hits in the loss.

St. Ambrose was unable to overcome a five-run Webber International first inning in the second game. Ryan hit a solo home run in the third and Liam Dennehy added a two-run shot in the fourth to get the Bees to within 6-3 before the Warriors tacked on three more runs. Mike Coughlin had an RBI double and Gabe Panza added a two-run single in the seventh to account for the final score. Reed and Jack Cunningham each collected a pair of hits. Tyler Bromer was charged with the loss.

March 10
Webber International 8, St. Ambrose 4 - box score

Webber International took advantage of four St. Ambrose errors to score four unearned runs to sweep the three-game series with an 8-4 win. Gabe Panza led off the third inning with a double and later came around to score to give the Bees a short-lived 1-0 lead. The Warriors came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. All three were unearned thanks to three SAU errors. Colin Berry had a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and added a two-run single in the eighth for the final Bee runs. Panza finished 3-for-4 while Michael Ryan, Cole Aughenbaugh and Liam Dennehy each had two hits. Noah Kesselmayer took the loss.

March 11
St. Ambrose 9, Viterbo 8 - box score

The Bees built a big lead before needing a late run for a 9-8 victory over Viterbo. After watching the V-Hawks score three runs in the top of the second, the Bees rallied for two runs in the bottom of the second, and added three more in both the third and fourth frames for an 8-3 lead. Viterbo battled back and ultimately tied the game at 8-8 with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth. But St. Ambrose had the answer in the bottom of the inning. Braeden Reed started the inning with a walk before moving to second on Jack Cunningham's sacrifice bunt. Cole Aughenbaugh singled to right to move Reed to third. One out later, Mike Coughlin reached on a Viterbo error, allowing what proved to be the winning run to score. Ryan Andrews worked a perfect ninth inning in earning the win in relief. Peyton Minder finished with three hits and three RBIs in the victory. Michael Ryan and Aughenbaugh each had two hits.

#1 Southeastern 11, St. Ambrose 5 - box score
St. Ambrose dropped the first game of a three-game set against No. 1-ranked Southeastern 11-5. The Fire took control early, plating eight runs in the second inning. The Bee offense came alive late, collecting nine hits over the final six innings. SAU got on the board in the fourth on Gabe Panza's two-out two-run triple to left. Mike Coughlin had an RBI single in the eighth inning, and Andrew Rodriguez had a two-run double in the ninth. Cole Aughenbaugh finished 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs. Rodriguez and Braeden Reed each had two hits. Colton Carr was charged with the loss.

March 16

#1 Southeastern 16, St. Ambrose 1 - box score

St. Ambrose concluded its trip to Florida by dropping a doubleheader at No. 1 Southeastern by scores of 7-2 and 16-1. The Bees collected a total of 10 hits in the two games. The top-ranked Fire belted six home runs, including four in the second game. SAU got its runs late in the opener. Cole Aughenbaugh had a bases-loaded single in the sixth to plate Michael Ryan with the team's first run. In the seventh, Peyton Minder's ground out brought in Mike Snow. The Bees left five runners on base over the final two frames. Noah Kesselmayer took the loss. A five-run second inning propelled Southeastern in the final game of the series. The Bees' lone run came in the fifth on a Ryan sacrifice fly. Tyler Bromer was charged with the loss.
