Ninth-inning rally stuns St. Ambrose

Ninth-inning rally stuns St. Ambrose

The 2018 season came to a close in heartbreaking fashion.

Leading 4-1 entering the ninth, the Bees surrendered four runs all with one out, and saw Roosevelt walk off with a 5-4 win in the CCAC Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The loss, coupled with a 13-4 setback to top-seeded Judson late Friday night in the first round, ended SAU's year at 16-32 overall.

St. Ambrose appeared poised to survive another day after a Kevin Zanger RBI single in the third, a Zach Stroman two-run single in the fourth and a Tanner Ennis run-scoring single in the seventh had given the Bees a 4-1 lead.

To that point, Bee starter Dantley Johnson had been in control. The junior left-hander allowed just six hits and one run through the first seven innings and had struck out six. He pitched around a pair of one-out hits in the eighth, escaping the mini jam with a double-play ball. But after retiring the first hitter on a fly ball to center to start the ninth, Johnson ran into trouble.

Roosevelt (26-23) started its rally with a double and then a walk. A double to left plated two, cutting the SAU lead to 4-3. Another double brought in the tying run and forced the Bees to the bullpen. Tyler Bromer entered in relief, but after a walk, the Lakers picked up their fourth hit of the inning, a single to right to bring in the winning run.

Stroman, Ennis and David Gonzalez each had two hits in the season finale.

St. Ambrose had its back to the wall after losing its tournament opener 13-4 to regular-season champion Judson in a game that ended well after midnight.

A four-run third inning helped the Eagles jump to a 9-0 lead in the top of the fifth.

Gonzalez and Ennis were responsible for bringing in the four SAU runs. Gonzalez got the Bees on the board with an RBI double in the fifth. In the seventh, Ennis had an RBI single, and an inning later, Gonzalez's sacrifice fly was followed by a run-scoring single from Ennis to account for the final score.

It was part of a 4-for-5 game for Ennis. Gonzalez, Zanger and Matt Baldwin each finished with two hits.

Nate Kurtz took the loss.
