Offense comes to life as Bees sweep Crimson Wave

St. Ambrose exploded for 36 runs to sweep a three-game weekend series at Calumet St. Joseph.

The Bees won Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 15-1 and 14-4 before completing the sweep with a 7-5 win Sunday. The victories, which snapped a six-game losing streak, move SAU to 16-29 overall and 13-16 in the CCAC. They also guarantee the Bees a spot in the upcoming CCAC Tournament.

SAU pounded out 15 hits in the opener, with Josh Hlubek leading the way. The junior catcher went 3-for-3 with a grand slam and six RBIs in the win.

Cole Aughenbaugh and David Gonzalez each also had three hits. Kevin Zanger and Tanner Ennis each picked up two hits.

Hlubek started the scoring with a two-run single as part of a six-run second inning. The Bees added three runs in the third before tacking on six more runs in the fifth, highlighted by Hlubek's grand slam.

Gonzalez and Ennis each drove in two runs while Aughenbaugh, Matt Baldwin and Zach Stroman each had one RBI.

Nate Kurtz got the win after allowing one run over six innings. Noah Kesselmayer recorded the final three outs in relief.

The Bees picked up 15 more hits in Saturday's night cap, a seven-inning 14-4 win. Seven different players had at least one hit and eight Bees knocked in at least one run.

The first five hitters in the lineup each had a multi-hit game, with Zanger, Baldwin and Aughenbaugh each getting three hits. Gonzalez and Ennis had two hits apiece.

This time St. Ambrose had to come from behind after giving up three runs in the top of the first. But single runs in the first and second were followed by two runs in both the third and fourth innings as SAU pulled in front 6-3. The Bees broke things open with a six-run sixth before closing out the win with a pair of runs in the seventh.

Tyler Bromer earned the victory while Luke Bechina pitched the final two frames.

SAU overcame another deficit and four errors in Sunday's finale.

Trailing 4-0 through four, the Bees came back in the fifth. Andrew Barreto had a two-run single and Hlubek added an RBI hit to bring the team back to within a run. Gonzalez and Ennis had run-scoring hits as part of a three-run sixth that gave St. Ambrose a 6-4 lead.

Calumet St. Joseph (13-40, 7-22 CCAC) got one run back in the bottom of the sixth but Zanger's single in the ninth plated Barreto with an insurance run.

Jordan Chapel, one of five SAU pitchers used in the game, got the win in relief of Dantley Johnson. Justin Shaffer, Kane Klais and Trevor Hatcher followed to combine for four innings of one-run ball, that an unearned run. Hatcher got the save with a perfect ninth inning.

St. Ambrose will close the regular season with a single nine-inning game at St. Francis Tuesday before opening the CCAC Tournament Friday.
