SAU loses three-game series to Trinity Christian

St. Ambrose committed six errors and allowed 20 runs in dropping a doubleheader at Trinity Christian by scores of 10-4 and 10-3 Saturday afternoon in Palos Heights, Ill.

The Trolls also defeated the Bees 7-3 at Modern Woodmen Park Friday to sweep the three-game series.

The losses drop SAU to 13-26 overall and 10-13 in the CCAC.

Five of the six Bee errors came in the first game Saturday, leading to three unearned runs. The miscues erased a fast start for St. Ambrose, which scored three first-inning runs. Matt Baldwin started it all with a two-out walk. Andrew Barreto followed with a walk of his own before Cole Aughenbaugh singled to score both runners. It was part of a 3-for-4 game for Aughenbaugh. Peyton Minder was hit by a pitch and Tanner Ennis came through with a run-scoring single for a 3-0 lead.

After Trinity Christian (25-18, 15-9 CCAC) scored a run in the second, two SAU errors led to a three-run third to give the Trolls the lead.

Leading 5-3, TCC broke things open in the sixth, taking advantage of two walks and another error to plate five more runs for a 10-3 lead. Barreto scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to account for the final score.

Nate Kurtz was tagged with the loss.

Kevin Zanger had a three-hit game of his own in Saturday's Game 2. Ennis and David Gonzalez each had two hits as St. Ambrose collected 11 hits. But Trinity Christian pounded out 18 hits and scored in six of their eight innings to win 10-3.

Baldwin had a sacrifice fly in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1, before TCC built a 7-1 lead entering the seventh. Zach Stroman led off that frame with a solo home run and the Bees threatened for more before leaving the bases loaded.

Minder drove in SAU's final run in the ninth before the Bees again left the bags loaded, three of 13 the team left on base in the loss.

Dantley Johnson took the loss.

St. Ambrose will host Judson in a single nine-inning game Monday before welcoming Saint Xavier to Modern Woodmen Park for a Tuesday doubleheader.
