Two-run ninth gets Bees past Titans

Kevin Zanger had an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie and Matt Baldwin followed with a sacrifice fly to help St. Ambrose defeat Indiana South Bend 4-3 Wednesday afternoon in Lakeville, Ind.

The win gets the Bees back to .500 in the conference at 10-10. SAU is 13-23 overall.

Max Rumpf started the ninth by reaching on a passed ball after striking out. Pinch hitter Kevin Aderman laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to get Rumpf into scoring position. After David Gonzalez was intentionally walk, Zanger broke the tie with his double down the right-field line. Baldwin then lifted a flyball to right to score Gonzalez with what proved be an important run.

Because in the bottom of the ninth, Indiana South Bend scored one run and had the potential tying run on first base with only one out. But Luke Bechina limited any further damage in picking up his first win of the season. Bechina allowed two hits and one run over 2 1/3 innings in relief.

Zanger finished with two hits and Baldwin drove in a pair of runs, including an RBI single in the third inning that gave St. Ambrose a 1-0 lead.

After the Titans (10-33, 6-18 CCAC) got the run back in the fourth, Tanner Ennis drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the fifth to give the Bees a 2-1 lead. IUSB pushed across another run in the seventh leading to the ninth-inning heroics.

Noah Kesselmayer started for SAU, surrendering five hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

The Bees will begin a three-game series with Trinity Christian with a single nine-inning home game Friday at Modern Woodmen Park at 4 p.m. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in Palos Heights, Ill., Saturday.
