Kurtz throws complete game to get Bees past Trojans

Nate Kurtz went the distance, pitching St. Ambrose to a 4-2 win at Trinity International Tuesday afternoon.

He was backed by a three-hit game from Andrew Barreto and an SAU offense that gave him a three-run lead after just two innings.

The Bees struck for two runs in the top of the first thanks to a Trojan error. David Gonzalez got things started with a double down the right-field line. Kevin Zanger walked but was erased as Cole Aughenbaugh reached on a fielder's choice. Zach Stroman then reached on an error which allowed Gonzalez to score. Matt Baldwin followed with a sacrifice fly to stake Kurtz to a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Aughenbaugh's two-out bases-loaded sacrifice fly scored Josh Hlubek with the team's third run.

Another sac fly, this one coming off the bat of Zanger in the fourth, scored Barreto to up the lead to 4-0.

Kurtz made the lead hold up.

The senior right-hander allowed just five hits and two runs, one earned, in the complete-game win. Nursing a 4-2 lead in the ninth, he escaped a two-on, one-out jam to close out the win.

The Bees, now 12-21 overall and 9-8 in the CCAC, will host Judson in a three-game weekend series beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday.
