St. Ambrose closes series with win at Robert Morris

Tanner Ennis had two two-out, two-run doubles, the first coming as part of a three-run first inning, to help St. Ambrose take the final game of a three-game set with Robert Morris 5-2 Sunday afternoon in Bensenville, Ill.

The Eagles won the series by sweeping a doubleheader from the Bees at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday.

SAU got off to a fast start Sunday. David Gonzalez led off with a single and Cole Aughenbaugh followed one out later with a base hit. Matt Baldwin drew a two-out walk before Peyton Minder was hit by a pitch to plate Gonzalez. Ennis then collected his double to right for a 3-0 lead.

Those first-inning runs would prove to be all Dantley Johnson would need. The junior left-hander went the distance, allowing 11 hits and two runs. He struck out seven without issuing a walk.

Johnson was touched up for a pair of runs in the fifth as Robert Morris (29-9, 12-5 CCAC) closed to within a run.

But the Bees got those runs back in the seventh.

With Aughenbaugh, who started the inning with a double to left, and Minder on the corners, Ennis again came through with a double to right to give SAU some breathing room.

Aughenbaugh collected three hits in the victory.

SAU was able to salvage a game after losing a doubleheader 6-5 and 9-2 (10 innings) Saturday.

Gonzalez, Baldwin, Minder and Kevin Zanger each had two of the Bees' 10 hits in the opener. Andrew Barreto had a big two-run double in the fourth, helping St. Ambrose to a 3-2 lead.

After the Eagles went in front 5-3 in the top of the fifth, Zach Stroman and Baldwin each drove in a run in the bottom half of the inning to bring the teams even at 5-5. But RMU scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the sixth and held on from there.

Trevor Hatcher took the loss in relief of Nate Kurtz.

The SAU offense scratched out just two hits in the game Saturday. Gonzalez and Minder each drove in a run to counter a two-run sixth inning from the Eagles.

In the 10th, Robert Morris put together six hits and took advantage of two walks and an early error to plate seven runs to break things open.

Tyler Bromer was charged with the loss after pitching into the 10th inning.

SAU (11-21, 8-8 CCAC) will play a single nine-inning game at Trinity International Tuesday before hosting Judson in a three-game set next weekend.
