St. Ambrose gets split of doubleheader vs. Olivet Nazarene

Andrew Barreto hit a two-out, two-run double in the sixth inning to help St. Ambrose win the second game 5-2 and salvage a split of a doubleheader with Olivet Nazarene Friday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.

The Tigers took the opener 5-4 with a three-run rally in the seventh inning.

Cole Aughenbaugh and Zach Stroman added RBI singles to help the Bees win Game 2 behind the pitching of Noah Kesselmayer.

Kesselmayer allowed just four hits and one run, that coming in the third inning, over seven innings. Luke Bechina struck out a pair over the final two innings to close things out.

A ONU throwing error on a Josh Hlubek bunt allowed Stroman to score the tying run in the bottom of the third and Aughenbaugh followed with his single to left to score Barreto to give St. Ambrose a 2-1 lead.

Stroman had a big two-out single in the fourth to plate Tanner Ennis before Barreto knocked in two with his double to left in the sixth.

Peyton Minder collected two of the Bees' seven hits in the win.

The victory came on the heels of a heart-breaking loss in the opener.

SAU led 4-0 in the sixth inning thanks to run-scoring singles from Hlubek and Aughenbaugh and a sacrifice fly off the bat of David Gonzalez.

Olivet Nazarene (15-12, 5-3 CCAC), playing as the home team in Game 1, got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Then in the bottom of the seventh, with one run already in and the bases loaded, a dropped fly ball down the line allowed the tying and winning runs to score.

The loss wasted a solid start from Nate Kurtz, who allowed just one hit and two runs over 5 2/3 innings. Jordan Chapel was charged with the loss after giving up one earned run in his one inning of work.

Weather has forced the postponement of the final game of the three-game series. The teams are working on finding a makeup date.

St. Ambrose (7-15, 4-2 CCAC) is next scheduled to host St. Francis Tuesday at Modern Woodmen Park.
