Bromer, Johnson pitch Bees to home-opening sweep of TIU

Playing at home for the first time in 2018, St. Ambrose received strong pitching performances from Tyler Bromer and Dantley Johnson in sweeping a doubleheader from Trinity International by scores of 1-0 and 12-1 Wednesday at Modern Woodmen Park.

Bromer went the distance in the opener, scattering seven hits over seven shutout innings. He struck out seven.

The Bee offense managed just two hits - singles from Cole Aughenbaugh and David Gonzalez - but took advantage of one of the Trojans' four errors to score the game's only run in the third.

Josh Hlubek drew a leadoff walk in the inning and Aughenbaugh followed with a single to right. Jeff Harper, pinch running for Hlubek, advanced to third and when the right fielder's throw sailed over the third baseman's head, Harper was allowed to score.

SAU had other chances, leaving two runners on in the first, fourth and fifth innings, thanks to a TIU error each inning.

But Bromer was up to the challenge, stranding seven Trinity International runners. His biggest threat came in the top of the seventh. After Hlubek picked off a runner at first for the second out of the inning, the Trojans collected back-to-back hits to put runners on first and second. Bromer escaped the jam and earned his complete-game shutout by getting a soft line out to left to end the game.

Then it was Johnson's turn.

He matched Bromer with seven strikeouts while going the distance in a shortened 7-inning 12-1 win.

But unlike Bromer, Johnson got more than enough offensive support. The Bees pounded out 16 hits, with Aughenbaugh, Gonzalez, Kevin Zanger and Andrew Barreto each finishing with three hits. SAU beat out several bunt hits and put down four squeeze bunts.

St. Ambrose scored at least one run in each of the last six innings, including a five-run outburst in the seventh.

Barreto, Hlubek and Aughenbaugh had consecutive one-out singles before Zanger cleared the bases with a double to right-center. Gonzalez then followed with a two-run home run over the right-field wall to end the game.

Zach Stroman picked up two hits in the second game. Barreto knocked in two runs while Tanner Ennis, Matt Baldwin, Payton Minder and Hlubek each drove in one.

St. Ambrose, now 6-14 overall and 3-1 in the CCAC, will open a three-game series with Olivet Nazarene with a doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park beginning Friday at 1 p.m. The teams will wrap up the set Saturday in Bourbonnais, Ill.
