SAU Baseball on Spring Break trip

Saturday, March 10
No. 13 Keiser 6, St. Ambrose 2 (Game 1) - box score
David Gonzalez had two hits and Matt Baldwin knocked in a run as St. Ambrose started its Spring Break trip with a 6-2 loss at No. 13 Keiser, in the first game of a four-game series. The Bees got on the board first. In the top of the first, Gonzalez had a two-out single and Tanner Ennis followed with a double down the line, before Payton Minder reached on an error to give SAU a 1-0 lead. But Keiser struck for three runs in the bottom of the first and added another run in the second. St. Ambrose got a run back in the fourth as Zach Stroman hit a two-out double to left and Baldwin came through with his RBI single cut the margin to 4-2. That would be it for the Bees as Keiser tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Dantley Johnson was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs over three innings. Jordan Chapel allowed just one earned run over the final three innings in relief.

No. 13 Keiser 13, St. Ambrose 2 (Game 2) - box score
St. Ambrose gave up multiple runs in four separate innings in losing Game 2 Saturday 13-2. Keiser scored three times in the second inning and two more in the fourth before breaking things open with a six-run fifth inning. The Seahawks added their final two runs in the sixth. Two Keiser errors allowed the Bees to score twice in the sixth. Minder reached on an error, Stroman singled and Barldwin reached on a throwing error which allowed both runners to score. SAU managed just five hits in the game. Tyler Bromer took the loss.

Sunday, March 11
No. 13 Keiser 3, St. Ambrose 1 (Game 1) - box score
A solid effort from Nate Kurtz and a solo home run from David Gonzalez weren't enough as St. Ambrose fell to No. 13 Keiser 3-1. Kurtz allowed just three runs over six innings but was saddled with the loss. Gonzalez's homer to right leading off the fourth inning tied the game at 1-1. It was one of two hits in the game for Gonzalez as the Bees finished with four hits as a team. The Seahawks broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth before adding an insurance run in the sixth.

No. 13 Keiser 19, St. Ambrose 2 (Game 2) - box score
Keiser scored in five of its six innings, including a four-run first and a nine-run fourth, in sweeping the four-game set with a 19-2 win Sunday. Cole Aughenbaugh, who had two of SAU's four hits, started the scoring. He led off the game with an infield single, stole second, and came around to score on Tanner Ennis' triple. Jeff Harper, pinch running for Josh Hlubek who drew a walk, scored the other Bee run on Aughenbaugh's two-out single in the fourth. Noah Kesselmayer was charged with the loss.

Tuesday, March 13
No. 9 Saint Thomas 14, St. Ambrose 0 - box score
No. 9 Saint Thomas scored three runs in the first inning and four more in the second to defeat St. Ambrose 14-0 Tuesday afternoon. SAU pitchers combined to allow 10 hits, issue nine walks and hit five batters. The Bees were limited to just three hits - a Nick Dinkel single in the second, a Mike Coughlin single in the third and a Zach Stroman double in the fourth. Justin Shaffer was charged with the loss.

Wednesday, March 14
Indiana South Bend 10, St. Ambrose 6 - box score
St. Ambrose was unable to hold on after a four-run first inning in dropping the CCAC opener to Indiana South Bend 10-6 Wednesday in Saint Leo, Fla. Andrew Barreto and Zach Stroman each drove in a run before Kevin Aderman's two-run single capped the four-run first. But the Bees gave it right back as the Titans scored five runs in the bottom of the first for a 5-4 lead. IU-South Bend increased its lead to 10-4 after five innings. Cole Aughenbaugh had an RBI triple and scored on Mike Coughlin's run-scoring single in the sixth to account for the final score. Aderman finished with two of the Bees' eight hits. Dantley Johnson took the loss.

St. Ambrose 15, Indiana South Bend 5 (8 inn.) - box score
Aughenbaugh and Nick Dinkel each had three hits to help SAU salvage a split of the doubleheader with a 15-5 win over Indiana South Bend. Barreto, Stroman and Payton Minder also had multi-hit games as the Bees banged out 14 hits. St. Ambrose led just 6-5 before exploding for eight runs in the seventh inning. Josh Hlubek and Aughenbaugh each had an RBI in the frame, an inning that saw SAU capitalize on three Titan errors. Dinkel had an RBI single in the eighth inning to end the game. Tyler Bromer got the win after allowing four runs over 4 1/3 innings. Noah Kesselmayer earned the save after working the final 3 2/3 innings.

Saturday, March 17
No. 8 William Carey 9, St. Ambrose 4 - box score
Matt Baldwin's two-run single in the third inning gave St. Ambrose a 3-2 lead over William Carey, but the Bees were unable to hold on in a 9-4 loss. The No. 8-ranked team in the country tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth then took a 4-3 lead in the fifth before scoring three runs in the sixth. Cole Aughenbaugh singled in a run in the eighth to account for the final SAU run. Kevin Zanger collected a pair of hits in the loss. Noah Kesselmayer took the loss after allowing seven runs over 5 2/3 innings. Jordan Chapel allowed one earned run over the final 2 1/3 innings.

No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett 10, St. Ambrose 2 - box score
St. Ambrose scratched out two hits in a 10-2 loss to No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett to close the trip. The game was scoreless through two innings, but from there, the Grizzlies scored at least one run in five straight frames. SAU got on the board in the seventh. Andrew Barreto started things with a single to center and Baldwin followed by drawing a walk. Payton Minder sacrificed the two into scoring position. Aughenbaugh's groundout plated Barrreto and then Baldwin came around on a wild pitch. Josh Hlubek had the other Bee hit in the game, a one-out single in the third. Luke Bechina was charged with the loss.
