Hart and Miller homer to lead Bees to CCAC championship round

Hart and Miller homer to lead Bees to CCAC championship round

Zach Hart hit a go-ahead two-run home run and Mike Miller followed with a solo shot two batters later to help St. Ambrose to a 6-1 win over Saint Xavier at the CCAC Tournament Monday morning.

The win in the battle of the two remaining tournament unbeatens, puts the Bees in the driver's seat, needing just one more win to capture the tournament title and an automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round.

SAU will play for the CCAC crown Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

And the Bees will enter that game on a 13-game winning streak following Monday's win.

After Saint Xavier (27-28) scratched out a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, Hart and Miller combined to get St. Ambrose in front.

Oli Herrera had a one-out single to left before Hart followed with his second homer of the year to give the Bees the lead. Miller followed one out later with a no-doubter to increase the lead to 3-1.

In the fifth, the duo came through again as Miller's single scored Hart for a 4-1 lead. Jake McCabe had a sacrifice fly in the sixth and David Gonzalez added an RBI single in the seventh.

That would be more than enough support for Nate Kurtz, who nearly went the distance, scattering 10 hits over 8 2/3 innings. He struck out four before giving way to Cooper Sant Amour, who got out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth.

SAU will now await four elimination games to learn its final opponent. Later Monday, St. Francis will play Purdue Northwest and Indiana South Bend will play Olivet Nazarene. Those two winners will play Monday at 7:30 p.m. before that winner takes on Saint Xavier Tuesday at 4:30.

A final game scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. would be played if necessary.
